Item is for distilling not brewing.
I ordered this product through ignorance on my part. I did not know there was a difference between them for brewing beer,wine,mead and distilling. My error.Nice packaging and quick to ship. I am foregoing return due to low cost of item. Who knows? Maybe I will try distilling someday!!

This hydrometer reads correctly. I like that the pack comes with 2. There's a chart that definitely comes in handy. I good product at a great price.

Only half the equation
I like to have a couple extra of these around because I get butter fingers when I am working and, um, drinking some of the earlier products, so I grabbed this backup pack.They work well. I tested them against a higher value hydrometer that it very accurate and it is quite good. They feel pretty solid, although most people can tell you how easy it is to break one if you aren't paying attention.I just knocked off a star because it should come with a test jar. You can't use it without a tall, free-standing tube. The manufacturer knows that.

I was honestly surprised to see the size of these hydrometers when they arrived. The listing very clearly states the dimensions (around 11 inches), but somehow I was expecting them to be roughly half the size.They appear well made and arrived in individual cylindrical cases to protect them from accidental drops or bumps.They are accurate and the scale is easy to read.The one downside is that due to their size, you need to have a pretty deep container in order to take a measurement.I tested them and

This hydrometer is geared strictly for measuring proof/% of alcohol. The scale is designed to go from 0 to 200 proof and has no measurements for specific gravity (and wouldn't cover specific gravities above 1 anyway). So, if you're testing final distilled products or hard liquor or high proof alcohol, this is for you. If you're making wine and beer and need SG and Brix scales, this is NOT for you.
