Q: Does water get trapped under black part of carafe after washing and get mildew?

I would imagine any thing that gets wet and traps moisture would have the propensity for mildew.

Q: Does anyone know if you need to preheat the glass to prevent it from breaking?

Hello, I have one I use daily and after my kettle whistles I wait about 45 seconds before I pour over the ground coffee. (I do this mainly because I read pouring too hot of water onto ground coffee could burn the beans and leave you with a burnt coffee taste). I do not preheat the glass and I haven't had any issues.
