Q: Can I use the pot directly in the fire pit?

I presume you mean directly on the flames. My experience with this little pot is ONLY on a gas stove, and the flames were right against the pot bottom and around the bottom edge a bit. The pot discolored from the heat but still held up well for the next trip. If used over a wood fire and placed directly in contact with the flame I would imagine it would become discolored and "smoke stained" but would hold up ok. Won't look like "NEW" but it "IS" camping gear and should do the job well. I'm certain it would perform just as good placed next to hot coals rather than directly above the flame, but to each his own.

Q: Is the anodized aluminum scratch resistant? Would you have to use something like bamboo utensils?

Hello，please keep in mind that don’t scrape the coating with metal or things hard, or the coating shedding might occur and shorten the service life of the pots.

That depends My recommendation would be wash all camp cookware then put some heat to it by boiling some water throw it out and do it again and drink your coffee or tea. I wish I could give you a better answer on the Polyfluorinated Substances, but as far as backpacking this works like a champ. I hope this helps.

It's best to use the right size burner in case he falls over while using it.
