Purcell: King Arthur

I was thrilled to see this recording is available on CD. Alfred Deller's work has often been overlooked in recent years because he was a very early student and proponent of early music practice and performance. While it is true that in recent years better and more authentic ancient instruments have been available to performers, and there has been a bodyof scholarship that was not available to him, Deller himself was a consumate performer and a dedicated scholar of ancient music, and this shines through in all these performances. He almost singlehandedly brought countertenor performance back to the concert stage, and his interpretations are masterful. While more modern recordings may meet a higher standard of authenticity in the instruments and the interpretation, these recordings have great musicianship and dedication behind them and deserve to be heard. In understanding any early music piece, it is important to hear and compare different recordings and interpretations in order to fully understand the range and form of the piece. Alfred Deller is one of the artists whose work and teachings form the basis for our current understanding, and I am glad that this interpretation is once again available to us all.

Chi legge conoscerà sicuramente Purcell e Deller, non si discute sul valore musicale di questa registrazione. Rimasterizzazione che non altera la timbrica delle voci e degli strumenti, spazialità notevole, stampa silenziosa. Sicuramente un acquisto consigliato.

Das bekannteste Stück daraus dürfte der "Cold Song" sein, den Maurice Bevan mit fragilem Bariton hervorragend singt, aber auch die eher an traditioneller Musik orientierten Soldatengesänge überzeugen. Insgesamt ist das Werk bei Deller und dem hervorragenden Deller Consort in den allerbesten Händen und gibt einen Hinweis auf die Wegbereitung von eher vollem Barockklang der Einspielungen der 50er und 60er Jahre hin zur historischen Aufführungspraxis.

Airs, danses et chœurs se succédaient accompagnés de l’orchestre pour satisfaire l’oreille anglaise qui appréciait le genre. La mise en scène de ce spectacle posait tant de problèmes techniques que la musique permettait de meubler les temps morts et assurer la continuité dramatique. Une œuvre d’une diversité extraordinaire musicalement parlant avec un Alfred Deller, contre-ténor toujours aussi brillant. Un moment tout à fait jubilatoire.

Je connaissais déjà l'oeuvre, mais ne l'avais plus écoutée depuis des lustres -- sur le vinyle abominablement abîmé que j'ai tant tardé à remplacer.La redécouverte a été formidable.

Pour tout amateur de Purcell et de son magnifique King Arthur, voici un disque à posséder absolument, de quoi se faire plaisir avec de la belle musique d'opéra, une instrumentation hors pair et des voix superbes!
