Le Roi danse

Wonderful movie, shame it's so hard to find DVD!
I have been looking forward to watching this for many years! Great movie, transports you to another time through music, costume, attention to detail. Not like many "period" movies where actors move and talk like contemporary teenagers. A must for baroque fans. Note: you need to have all regions DVD player and have some command of French, as it only has French subtitles.

Good movie, not convenient format for Americans.
Good film, sumptuous art direction and music. This DVD is in PAL region 2/B format, and the subtitles are in French or Dutch... so it has been a way to brush up on my French. Too bad there aren’t English subtitles, but an intermediate French speaker can get most of the plot.

Lully: It''s All About Me
The title, King Is Dancing, refers to young and older Louis XIV. The story, however, centers on Jean Baptiste Lully, the Italian composer and dance choreographer. Mr. Lully struggles to find a place for himself in the court and fights (dirty) to retain his place. The music and dancing were great. There were plenty of good looking shots of the court and landscape. The story line plodded along. I only felt an emotional attachment to these characters: Lully's wife and Moliere; I don't know if it was intentional on the part of the script or direction, but all the other characters/actors left me cold.

Very disappointed because the DVD is a non US format
Very disappointed because the DVD is a non US format, hence it is unplayable. Would like to be able to send back. I would give zero stars but I can't submit review without a star

Compelling and a Must-See!
A fun treat for the fans; not surprisingly, the best scene is when they show Elvis filming the "Jailhouse Rock" routine. Highly recommended.

An interesting but emotionally flat music history movie
I watched Le Roi Danse (The King is Dancing) at the theatre, and bought the DVD at a local retail store. Watching this DVD reminded me of what I liked and dislike about this French film when I saw it in the big screen a few years ago. Like: an interesting subject, beautiful costumes and sets, and a sublime soundtrack. Dislike: lacks the charm, emotional impact and drama of Amadeus. For those unfamiliar with the story, Le Roi Danse is about the early reign of France's Louis XIV and the Sun King's love for music, theatre, and dance. The King tried to do his own dancing, and the Baroque composer Lully (who came to the French court from Italy) was not only happy to provide grand and majestic background music, but was also seemingly obsessed with the young monarch in many ways. Meanwhile, Lully developed a collabative relationship (and friendship) with the great French comic playwright Moliere. While the young Louis exercised increasing personal rule over his realm, his court's artistic scene underwent ideological shifts from piety to comedy and then to tragedy. This film will certainly interest fans of Baroque music and early modern theatre, but may confuse (and bore) the lay person looking simply for an enjoyable story. This DVD features video in letterbox (not true Widescreen) format with a French Dolby 2.0 and 5.1 soundtrack. No English track, only subtitles. The extras (trailer, bios, and "behind the scenes" featurette) are also in French only. Note to parents: there is explicit nudity and talk of certain adult-oriented subject matter that may be hard to explain to young children.
