they are built like tanks, waterproof
first off lets start buy stating the most important fact about these first gen mags...people who know maglites do not buy them for their "brightness" but rather there outstanding durability to cost ratio.Mags have earned this reputation since day one thus for this reason alone they have still not changed...why change something that isnt broke?they are built like tanks, waterproof, drop resitant, shock resistant and parts are readly available all over the net.upgrade bulbs,lens,seals,switches...you name it.now another very very important fact that i do not see written about or even mentioned.in the event of a long term power outage these D batteries will prove to be more vital...why? beacause when your batteries die simply replace and you are good to go.if your light sources are rechargable you are screwed unless you have a generator.this was proven in 2008 when hurricane ike made its way to ohio with sustained wind gust of 40-50mph winds, knocking out power for 3 days in my kneck of the woods.not only did i have to replace my D's in my 2 cell and 4 cell but if it wasnt for long term stash of batteries i would of been screwed.my Brothers rechargables went bad after two night, caught off gaurd by the winds he only had half a charge on his tactical super bright pieces of trash...no power to recharge.so my point is if you do not need a super bright rechargable, expensive flashlight dont waste your money.i change the batteries in mine every 6-12 months and they are fine.these are lifetime flashlights.both my 2 cell D's are 18 and 19 years old, sharing vehicle duties, hunting, fishing, dog finding and all around general pupose.they are scratched up and look like they been through heck!that is because they have! over the past 3 years i replaced the old krypton bulbls with LED's and made them virtually new and 3 times more bright.they will never be replaced as there is simply no reason to with parts all over amazon.now my 4 cell first generation was upgraded withn LED and a nice new glass lens and it literally illuminates my whole yard.its a beast, heavy, solid and more light than most any person will ever realisticaly ever need.in fact its so bright and useful it acompanis me on all of my hunting trips for the simple reason of long rang beam and excellent flood illumination in the appalachian foot hills were we roam.let me say this again...the 4 cell even with the old fashion krypton bulb is more than most anyone will ever need! if you live in a city with small lots its will illuminate not only your lot but a four lot area.so the two cells being less light and flood illumination is adequate for 99.9% of the general population.right now we live in a time of excess...people always have to have the latest and greates everything...from new phones,cars,computers...maglite still stays true to the old ways of adequate needs that are durable for a lifetime...thus all these review you are reading.so in short mags are realistic in terms of durability and price.

Just... So.... Great....... It's like the luminary version of a multi-tool knife.
The legend itself; this is as close to it as it comes. Despite losing one of the much sought after, alkaline, D batteries, and only being a 6-Cell, this is a beast. If you're a illumination enthusiast, a guy who happens to like flashlights, a guy who gets paid to intimidate people, a guy who needs something reliable to ward off aggressors, or just a boy scout on an outing; this is what you want. This is what you need. This is what anyone who has "flashlight" in their mind, should be picturing, and it's soooo perfect. Also, you can slam it on both a cinder block, or solid brick, and both will break (not recommended, just saying from experience). Seeing where you're going at night, and self defense, combined with an excessively long battery life, are the reasons for a 5 star on this. (Psst... yeah you, reading this review. You probably already saw the tempered-glass lens replacement if you've seen this on Amazon, so go ahead and add that to your cart; talk about making something perfect better.

Great for general use, not detail at a distance
I purchased this for use at work. I need something that will be bright to spot any window open.I work for a school, and at the end of a night I must make sure all the building is secured. I have used this a few times. Our building is stretched out very long and half of it has two floors. Sometimes people open a window an inch or two, and when it is an upstairs room, it is very hard to tell. This light is not the greatest for that purpose. I found myself going to the local store and getting the maglite with the led bulb. That one works great. This is fine as long as you don't need detail light. I use Duracell batteries for work, I think they last longer than the others.I use my flashlight over one hour a day, five days a week. With the led light, I use, the battery has lasted over two months of use, and just replaced the battery.I have decided to use this around my house, and is perfect for looking at stuff at night. I love this flashlight, but not for work. These flashlight are made great and last forever it seems. We have several of the Maglites in our house that are over 30 years old, and keep working with new batteries.

These are good lights for what they are, incandescent, heavy duty flashlights.
I have owned Maglites for many years, all sizes and types. The only thing that has killed them is battery leakage via a couple brands of alkaline batteries which leaked before their time, Duracell being the worst of them recently. One reviewer stated that he dropped the flashlight and it broke, another that the lens is fragile. Believe it or not, while holding this new 4 cell light and my old 3 cell LED Maglite outside tonight in order to take pictures of the beams (please see included pictures), I dropped it onto the cement sidewalk. Ended up with a couple of scratches and the bulb cocked due to the impact but it was still working. I took the lens off, reseated the bulb and it's fine.Notice the pictures, the blueish color is my LED and the other is this light. They both project well, however, the LED appears to show more accurate color and sharpens the details. The picture showing the pole and dusk to dawn light is at about 300'. The picture showing the chain link fence is at about 200'. The reason I choose a D cell, non rechargeable light is simple, if it goes dead during a power outage one can simply install new batteries and you're back in business, not true with the multitude of rechargeable lights being sold today. Additionally, the batteries are replaceable, in many of the top selling flashlights sold here on Amazon they are dead meat after a few years, toss them out. The LED flashlight I used in my photo comparison is well over five years old. Not only that, it was the victim of Duracell battery leakage yet I was able to clean it and put it back into service.
