Silent pfSense Firewall

I bought this XPC from Shuttle to build a pfSense firewall and replace my ASUS router. It was completely successful and took only a few hours from unboxing to fully-REconfigured network. There are some things you should know if you're planning to do this: pfSense does NOT like Realtek NICs. This Shuttle XPC DH370 has dual INTEL NICs and they work flawlessly.I chose an Intel Core i3-8100 CPU since it supports AES-NI. It runs at a very comfortable 40C using Shuttle's heatsink and dual fans designed specifically for its tiny case. I cannot hear any sound coming from the machine while it's on unless I pick it up and hold it to my face; only then can I hear the flowing air from the fans. The shipped BIOS version was already the version I needed (1.04) so that saved me a ton of time. It hides nicely in my side table with all my other LAN equipment. The case design is easy to work with. The parts are machined to snap in place comfortably and there are only three screws you need to remove to take out the case and SSD drive mount. The custom-fit CPU heatsink and fan assembly screws align correctly with their mount points on the motherboard making for a clean drop in after applying thermal paste to the CPU. Don't forget to wipe down the contact surfaces with rubbing alcohol beforehand. The board has a built-in SSD power and data combined connector cable for you already. It also accepts SODIMM DDR4 laptop memory of which I loaded up 8 GB of Kingston HyperX (in a 2x4 GB configuration) and gave 2 GB to temp and var as RAM disks for pfSense. The software is lighting fast, the box is whisper quiet, and it's crazy small. The SSD I chose is a WD Blue 250 GB; works great, way bigger than I needed, but who cares! Those SSDs are so inexpensive; the Corsair GTX USB memory stick I used to install pfSense was almost twice the cost, but it confirmed the USB 3.1 ports worked as expected (was seeing 400 MB/sec from the FreeBSD disk speed testing notes while pfSense booted off the Corsair). When you turn on the whole machine for the first time with the heatsink and fans in place and powered off the motherboard, the BIOS spins up the fans to full RPM then back down to test them and you CAN hear them quite easily. I would imagine if you plan to use one of these under constant load it will NOT be silent. However, you CAN unplug the fans and still use the machine as is. I did not stress-test mine this way so I can't say how hot it gets, but I did "test bench" it before assembling everything and the bare CPU ran at 91C. If you truly wanted a SILENT bookshelf-size setup with desktop horsepower, they won't stop you from disconnecting the fans and just using the heatsink. If passive cooling gets it under 80C you're pretty much golden.I'm extremely happy that this all worked out. I've been waiting patiently for all the parts to arrive and everything went smoothly once it did. I've been a Shuttle fan and continue to be one; my last Shuttle build was an AMD-based XPC for a recording studio. That machine literally NEVER died after years of constant running; it's in my closet right now. I can definitely recommend the DH370 for anyone looking to do some "heavy lifting" in a small package or to build an overpowered pfSense firewall. Go nuts, setup massive firewall rule tables, enable web filtering, VLAN your neighbor's kids stealing your WiFi to a VPN tunnel across the Atlantic, log every useless message to disk. I can't wait to see what else this thing can do!

Deploys/Works Perfectly

My 2nd shuttle, the original has been running for over 10 years. Love the small footprint, easy to install and runs great.

Well made/well designed but longevity?

He barebones mini itx is well designed and well made. Assembly was very good. Motherboard plenty of good operational options. Now as to how long the unit holds up in service we have to see.

I've built several of these and had very few problems. Good customer relations.

This was the 4th Shuttle XPC Slim system I've built. This is also the first one I've had with problems. It would not work with more than 1 SODIMM memory card. I contacted Shuttle in California and they promptly replaced the system with no questions asked. It's a pleasure doing business with them. The replacement system worked perfectly and I'd buy from them again.

Power limit causes terrible performance. Buyer Beware!

While they claim this unit supports 65w processors, the fact is the power of the processor is limited to 45w which causes terrible performance. This 45w would probably be fine for a Celeron, Pentium, or i3. But anything more than that and the CPU will throttle because of the power limit.I believe it should be considered false advertising to claim this supports 65w CPUs, but it can't actually deliver 65w. I put a i7-10700 processor in it. The clock speed for the 10700 is supposed to be 4.6GHz, but because of the 45w power limit the processor never goes over 3.2GHz. That is a major performance lost. I am extremely disappointed.

Love these

I love this. I have bought 8 of them in the last two months. They are so small that they easily fit on the back of your monitor. (Sometimes I have to use Velcro because they are no hole in the monitor for installation, but that works on fine.) I put an i3 processor in them. It boots up within 10 seconds. I love the speed. These are great.

What a deal!

This is the smallest rail-PC I was able to find for lab usage. One year ago, I paid $289 but found sub $200 on Amazon here. Can't skip this deal, I bought all the inventory different lab locations. Thank you Amazon!
